With the Spring term nearly at an end, the Easter break is a perfect time to take stock of all the school uniform and equipment scattered around to see if anything has gone missing, has been outgrown and needs replacing, or simply hasn’t yet been labelled.

Label Planet: Getting (Your Design) Into (Your Label) Shape

When designing labels, it’s important to keep in mind the shape of your labels to make sure that your design fits into and looks just right within the boundaries of the shape you are working with. It’s always best to take a little time to think about the benefits AND limitations of the label shape that you have chosen to use and adjusting your design to suit.

Here’s a few tips from us to help you get your design into shape!

Check Your Printer’s Specifications
This might seem like an odd one, given that we’re supposedly talking about designing and not printing labels, but it’s a first step that is well worth taking before you launch headfirst into design.

Most desktop printers are not capable of “Edge-To-Edge” or “Borderless” printing (whereby a printer can print the full area of a sheet) and – for the most part – such a function isn’t needed; the majority of documents printed on standard desktop printers will be documents with minimal design work, no coloured background, and very much centred in the middle of the sheet.

With sheets of labels, however, it is much more likely that you’ll need to print much closer to the edge – whether you’re creating a big design with a coloured background or because the labels you are using naturally take up more room on a sheet. This is more of an issue for “butt cut” or “square cut” labels, which are usually created by dividing the full area of a sheet into equal parts.

A quick and simple way to find the printable area offered by your printer is to set up a new document, set the page margins to 0, fill the page with a coloured background or coloured shape, and then print this document onto plain paper – any area that your printer cannot print will remain white and you’ll be able to adjust your design plans accordingly.

Top tip: if your printer CANNOT print the full area of your labels consider turning this to your advantage; you could use a coloured background for the central part of your labels only, leaving the outer edges (that you printer can’t print anyway) as a white border that becomes a natural part of your design. 

Keep Your Borders In Mind
It’s also a good idea to take a close look at the borders of your label shape and make sure that your design takes into account any variation. Apart from square cut labels, all labels will have some shaping to their borders (including rectangles with rounded corners, which have curved or radius corners). You should try to keep the shape of your labels in mind as you set up your design, regardless of whether you’re simply adding some text or you’ve got grand designs that will fill up (and make the most of) every curve and contour of your labels.

If you are planning to capitalise on choosing a particular shape of label then you’ll also need to bear in mind how accurate your software and hardware is. Most software and hardware will have limitations as to how much control you have over positioning and the degree of precision that they can offer, so if you’re trying to include elements in your design that mimic or closely follow the shape and borders of your label you might find that you have to compromise on accuracy or on the complexity of your design.

Top tip: if you know that you don’t have the most precise software and/or hardware, don’t make things harder for yourself – avoid using borders and/or shaped images that will make any slight inaccuracy in your positioning much more obvious. If you do want to add a border, we advise using a thicker border that will give you some leeway on your positioning. We’d also advise that if you’re including a coloured background or an image with a particular shape, you should oversize your design; this will give you some tolerance over the accuracy of your positioning AND avoid the problem of white edging around your labels. 

Improve Your Positioning By Keeping Things Centralised
Getting the perfect positioning can be a tricky business but a quick and easy way to give yourself a head start is to make sure you centralise all of the elements in your design, particularly if you’re printing onto labels that are round or oval in shape. This means that the elements of your design are more likely to remain safely in the centre of your labels and won’t stray so close to the edges of your labels that they get partially cut off when you print.

Think Carefully About Layering The Elements In Your Design
If you’re planning on including a lot of different elements in your design – particularly if you want to work with a mixture of text, images, and shapes – then it’s best to think of your design in terms of layers and to add your elements accordingly. We recommend doing a little bit of planning so that you can build your design up in stages, starting with the background and working to the front.

Thinking ahead can also help to make sure that all of the elements in your design have plenty of space, which can help to avoid the problem of “busy” designs that can end up looking messy, unprofessional, and can even wind up being totally illegible (which defeats the purpose of adding a label in the first place).

Top tip: if you’re working with basic software that doesn’t offer the greatest of control over your page layout, you should keep a close eye on the format and style options applied to the elements that you add. If you find that you’re struggling to get elements to stay in the correct position when you try to layer them, it’s more than likely that one of the format or style options is set up to prevent layering or to arrange elements in a specific position relative to other elements nearby. You should be able to choose alternative options that allows you to position your elements with more precision than the default options do.

Stikins ® & Trons ®: FAQ – How Do I Order Name Labels From Label Planet?

We like to keep things simple so we try to make sure our customers can easily order their name labels in a way that is convenient for them. We accept orders online, by phone, and by post (and for bulk orders from organisations such as schools and nursing or residential care homes we also accept orders by email or fax).

How To Order Online
The majority of our customers order their name labels online from our website, where you can place an order at any time, day or night! Simply select the product(s) you want to purchase, enter the text you want printing, and choose the pack size you prefer. You can pay with a credit or debit card or use your PayPal account.

We highly recommend taking a look at our site even if you know that you’re going to order by phone or by post; our site features a number of useful resources including FAQs, more detailed information about what our products are like and how they work, the latest pricing and delivery information, a blog of useful tips for getting the very best out of your name labels, and downloads of our Instructions For Use and Order Form (in case you need a spare!).

How To Order By Phone
Our Customer Service team is available to take orders by phone between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Simply give us a call to let us know what you’d like to order and we’ll get your order processed for you. You can pay by credit or debit card; if you’ve ordered from us before keep your previous order number to hand for a quick and easy re-order (with or without amends!).

Please note that we are unable to accept American Express cards.

Schools: send the details of the labels you want to order by email or by fax. For bulk orders, please email the names to us in a spreadsheet with the first names in the first column and the surnames in the second column.
You may request either a Proforma Invoice (for payment with order) or a School Invoice (30 days payment); payment can be made by credit or debit card, BACS transfer, or cheque.

Nursing/Residential Care Homes: send the details of the labels you want to order by email or by fax. For bulk orders, please email the names (and room numbers, if you wish to include these) to us in a spreadsheet with the first names (or full names) in the first column and the surnames (or room numbers) in the second column.

Label Planet: Top Tips – How To Pick The Perfect Product Label

Product labels often have a number of important roles to play; they may carry important information about your product, carry barcodes or QR codes that contain vital tracking information, or quite simply might provide a significant opportunity to help make your products, brand, and company stand out from the crowd.

Getting the right product label is an important choice – especially if you’ve spent months or even years developing your product and you want your labels to work just as hard as you have to help get your product sold.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a hit list of decisions that you need to make when choosing your product labels.

What Are You Sticking Them Onto & How Long Do They Need To Last?
Labels For Product Packaging:
Packaging labels need to remain firmly in place so you should make sure you choose a PERMANENT adhesive. If your packaging is made using unusual materials (especially plastic bags or boxes) you may find that standard permanent adhesives struggle to bond properly, which means you’ll need a stronger adhesive such as a HIGH TACK or MARINE adhesive. You may also be looking for a label that improves the security of your goods (especially for high value goods); we supply two “TAMPER EVIDENT” products, which can be used to provide evidence of tampering, to securely seal packaging, or to act as a warranty label or seal.

If it is of the utmost importance that your labels remain on the packaging, even if the items are to be moved around a lot, then you should consider choosing a POLYESTER or POLYETHYLENE label; these materials are much more durable than paper and offer protection against a variety of environmental factors including exposure to water and sunlight, which makes them perfect for use as long life tracking or asset labels.

Labels For Products (That Must Be Permanent):
Some product labels are used to add vital product information to items, which means the information must remain with your product for the lifetime of each item – so you must use a PERMANENT adhesive. If your products are made with unusual materials or have a curved or uneven surface you should consider choosing a stronger, more specialised adhesive (e.g. a HIGH TACK or MARINE adhesive) to ensure that your labels stay firmly in place. You may also want to apply one of our “TAMPER EVIDENT” label products to act as a warranty label or to indicate if an item has been tampered with. To create long life tracking or asset labels, you should choose one of our more durable materials; we have a range of POLYESTER and POLYETHYLENE labels, which are long lasting, waterproof labels that will survive in a variety of environments and conditions.

Labels For Products (That Must Be Removable):
It may be that the content of your labels is only required temporarily (e.g. pricing information) and so your labels should remove cleanly and easily from your products without doing any damage. In this case, you should choose labels made with a REMOVABLE ADHESIVE. If your items are particularly delicate (especially items made of paper or glass), then you may even want to consider a SUPER REMOVABLE ADHESIVE to ensure that your items remain undamaged when a label is eventually removed.

What Environments Do They Need To Work In?
Depending on the type of products you are labelling, you may need to take into account the environments that your products will be stored or used in when picking a product label. Two of the most common examples are food and drink products and cosmetic products; the former are likely to be exposed to a variety of conditions in kitchens (including exposure to liquids and variations in temperature), while the latter are likely to be used in bathrooms where they may be exposed to water or other liquids.

If you know that your labels need to survive in conditions where they may get wet then you should make sure you select a WATERPROOF label (or, as a cheaper alternative, a SPLASHPROOF label). Likewise, if you’re selling food and drink products that need to be stored in freezer conditions then you’ll need to make sure you choose DEEP FREEZE labels, which are made using a special adhesive that is designed specifically to function efficiently in freezer conditions.

How Much Content Do You Want To Add?
When designing labels for products, you’ll need to make sure that all of your information is clear and legible (especially for products that are required to show ingredients, allergen warnings, instructions for use, best before/use by dates, or health and safety warnings) AND that your branding looks attractive and professional.

A good tip is to make a note of everything you want to include on your labels (although actually typing it out is even better); if you find that you’ve got an awful lot of stuff to include but not a lot of space to add a label big enough to display it all neatly and legibly, you might want to consider breaking it up and using two or more smaller labels to create a cleaner appearance. This means you won’t end up compromising by either reducing your font to teeny tiny text or plastering a massive label all over your products and/or packaging.

What Do You Want Your Product To Look Like?
If you’re trying to create a particular appearance or build up brand recognition, you’ll want to make sure that your labels fit in with the overall ethos that you’re aiming to promote. Simply plastering a standard paper label onto your products could undermine any special design features that you’ve worked hard to add to your products and packaging, so it’s always worth looking at different material options to find the one that best matches your brand image:

Gloss Labels: these labels have a shiny smooth coating that creates a finish that is both decorative and professional in appearance. Our gloss polyester labels are particularly popular for use on cosmetics products, while our photo quality gloss paper labels are perfect for printing detailed designed work at a high resolution, even if you’ve got photographic images as part of your design.

Premium Quality Paper: made of a premium quality paper that has been treated with a special coating to give it a supremely smooth finish, these labels can help to produce excellent high resolution print that is sharp and precise. Our MPQ material is particularly popular for creating a professional finish, especially for branding and marketing labels that should be smart and crisp.

Coloured Paper: coloured labels are a brilliant starting point if you want your labels to be bold and bright, whether you’re trying to create a fun, fabulous brand identity or you simply want to draw attention to your products. We’ve got a range of subtle pastel shades for those who prefer a gentle bloom of colour or a choice of five fluorescent colours to really give your product a kick start.

Kraft Paper: made with an unbleached, uncoated Kraft paper, these labels have a ribbed brown colouring, which creates a natural appearance with a subtle touch of pattern and texture. Our Kraft Labels are especially popular for use as product labels where the products are homemade/handcrafted or gift items, or where a company wants to promote their products as being natural, bespoke, or handmade.

Transparent Polyester: transparent labels are a perfect tool for creating decorative and professional product labels because they provide design opportunities that other labels simply cannot provide. For example, they are brilliant product labels for use on products or packaging that are made with transparent materials (especially glass or plastic bottles), a perfect way to avoid problems with exact colour matching, and a simple solution to the issue of adding additional information to existing print work (where non-transparent labels would end up covering up some of your existing print).

Silver Metallic Polyester: with a matt metallic finish, these polyester labels are often used as professional long life tracking or asset labels – particularly on high value goods and electrical or electronic appliances.

Stikins ® & Trons ®: FAQ – How Do I Order A Pack To Share Between My Family?

For households who are keeping a close eye on their budget, buying a pack of name labels to share between two or more children (or, indeed, all members of your family) is a brilliant way to get the name labels you need without paying more for individual packs.

While our system won’t allow you to split a pack between two or more individual names (in other words, all of the labels within a pack have to be printed with the same text), we are more than happy for customers to get creative with their orders and request packs that can be shared. In fact, we’ve even got a few suggestions to get you started:

REQUEST A FAMILY NAME:
Using a surname only means you can share a pack of labels between family members and lost items can be returned to to the right family (albeit not necessarily with the right child!).

We don’t recommend this option if you know that your child shares their surname with other students in their class. If you choose to request a surname only, you might want to include an extra detail to make the most of your labels; for example, we have a number of customers who like to request “Family Surname” or “Surname” on the top line and a contact phone number on the bottom line. 

REQUEST BLANK SPACES OR LABELS THAT YOU CAN FILL IN LATER:
If you want to be able to personalise ALL of the name labels in your pack, you can always request a set of blank labels or leave blank spaces that you can fill in later – please note, you will need to make sure you have a laundry pen to ensure that whatever you write onto your labels will stay in place even after you’ve put your labelled items through the washing machine.

To request blank labels, simply use the space bar to enter a blank space in the “Line 1” and “Line 2” fields. You can also use the space bar to request that one of the lines remain blank (for example, enter a surname on the bottom line and leave the top line blank so you can write in a first name for each label). 

If you’re trying to request blank spaces at the start or end of a line, please make a note of this in the “Additional Information” box as you checkout; if you enter text with spaces at the start or end of a line, our system may automatically interpret these spaces as “non-characters” and won’t add the blank spaces that you need. 

REQUEST LABELS THAT YOU CAN CUT INTO INDIVIDUAL LABELS:
There are two ways to produce individual labels for two people:
  • Enter one full name on the top line and one full name on the bottom line and cut the labels in half.
    You can also enter both first names on the top line and enter the surname twice on the bottom line, but this can produce labels that are unevenly spaced.
  • Select the “Name On One Line” option and enter one first name followed by the surname followed by a second first name; you can then cut off one of the first names to create individual name labels.
    If your surname and/or first names are particularly long, consider using initials to prevent your font becoming too small.  
 REQUEST LABELS FOR “Name 1 & Name 2”:
Simply enter the surname on the bottom line and then the first names on the top line; common requests include “Name 1 and Name 2”, “Name 1 or Name 2”, and “Name 1 & Name 2”.

REQUEST AN INITIAL & A SURNAME:
This one only works if your children have names that begin with the same letter; entering an initial and a surname means the labels are more personal than if you just add a surname AND this option can help to avoid confusion if your children share their surname with others in their class.

Label Planet: FAQ – Which Template Should I Use?

At Label Planet, we always do our best to deliver great customer service from start to finish – and that includes providing templates and guidance on how to design and print labels.

Recently, we’ve been working on a number of projects to improve and expand the help and advice we offer; our aim is to create printing advice and templates for every label size and layout that we supply so our customers have all the tools they need to print their labels themselves.

Here’s a quick Q&A to help you find the template(s) you need:

Where Do I Find Templates On Your Website?
There are two ways to find a template:
  1. Visit the Label Templates section of our website:
    - Select the link for the label shape you are using (rectangular / circular / oval / square / special).
    - Scroll down to the label product you are using (they are sorted by number of labels per sheet).
    - Click on the Word icon to download a Word template (portrait), the PDF icon to download a PDF template (portrait), or click on “More Info” to view all of the templates available for that label size/layout.
  1. Visit the product page for your labels:
    - Click on the “Label Templates And Printing Information” link to view all of the available templates for that label size/layout.
How Do I Know Which Template Is The Right One For My Labels?
All of our products are assigned a product code that begins “LP” (for example LP4/99, LP6/105 GWP, LP84/46 REM).

The first part of the product code (LPXX/XX) refers to the size/layout of the product and this is the part of the code that tells you which template you need. All of our templates have file names that include the size/layout code of the label products they are to be used with, so as long as the size/layout code in the file name of the template you download from our size matches the size/layout part of the product code of your labels you know you’ve got the right template!

For example, if you have our four per page labels in yellow paper (product code: LP4/99 Y) or gloss white polyester (product code: LP4/99 GWP), you can use any of our templates that have LP4/99 in the file name.

How Do I Download The Template I Need?
The exact process will vary depending on the device/browser you are using but essentially you simply click the icon/link for the template you want to download and save a copy onto your device.

We recommend saving a copy rather than just opening the template as we have found that, in certain cases, if you try to work with an open copy of a template (even if you save it later) you might struggle to edit or print your template properly.

How Do I Open The Template I Have Saved?
There are two ways to open a saved template:
  • Locate the folder that your download has been saved to and open the file directly; you may need to manually select the software you want to use to edit your template if a default option isn’t selected or if the default option isn’t the software you want to use (generally speaking, you can do this by right clicking on the file and using the “open with” option that appears).
  • Open the software that you want to use to edit your template and then open the template from within that software (usually you will be given the option to create a “New” document or to “Open” an existing document – use the “Open” option to locate your saved template and select it to open it within the software you are using).
We recommend using the second option because this will allow your software to check for any compatibility issues between the template file and your software – and either alert you to this issue or make any necessary adjustments before you start working on your template.

If you find that your template doesn’t respond at all when you open it, double check for a banner going across the top of your window (usually yellow in colour) that says “Enable Editing”; software tends to automatically restrict files that you have downloaded from the internet for security reasons, which means that you have to confirm that you want to enable editing for that file before you can start to edit your template.

Should I Download The Word Or The PDF Template?
It depends on what software you have available for editing. The PDF templates can only be edited in graphics software packages (such as InDesign, Photoshop etc), which means you should only download one of these templates if you have access to software that is capable of editing PDF files.

The Word templates will, obviously, work in Word but they can also be used in other Word Processing software capable of editing the .docx file format (for example LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Pages (iWork) etc).

Should I Use The Portrait Or The Landscape Template?
While the majority of people will want to print their labels in the portrait layout, we know that sometimes people want to use the landscape orientation (so that the width becomes the height and the height becomes the width). It is possible to use a portrait template and simply rotate your text/images so that your design will print in a landscape orientation but you will probably end up working with a head tilt. Using a landscape template means you don’t have to constantly tilt your head to check that everything looks right.

What Are Text Box, Mirrored, And Bleed Templates?
These are versions of our Portrait and Landscape templates that are designed to help if you’re using your template in a more specific way (and give you a head start on editing your template):
  • Text Box: these templates include one text box per label, so you can simply replace the text in each box with your own. You can then use the Format Text Box tools to alter the font and style of the text to personalise your design.
  • Mirrored: these templates are set up with one text box per label with the text REVERSED. These templates are a starting point if you’re creating transparent labels that are to be stuck onto a transparent surface (e.g. a window) and read from the reverse side.
  • Bleed: these templates are set up with a design area that is slightly larger than your labels; these templates are for creating designs that include a coloured background or are a particular shape, whereby you can overlap your design to improve the final positioning of your image and to avoid white edging around your labels.

Stikins ® & Trons ®: FAQ – How Do I Order Labels With One Or Both Lines Left Blank?

Some of our customers prefer to request labels that are entirely blank or have blank spaces/lines that they can fill in themselves with a laundry or waterproof pen.

This option is ideal if you want to add different information to some or all of the labels within a pack or if you want to add information that you don’t have at the moment – for example, you may need to label the belongings of a friend or relative before they move into a nursing or residential care home but you don’t yet know the room number they will be assigned to.

Here’s a quick guide to requesting labels with a blank space, a blank line, or that are completely blank:

How To Order Labels That Are Completely Blank
If you order through our website, you won’t be able to add an item to your basket until you enter something into the two text fields (Enter Line 1 and Enter Line 2); to request blank labels, you simply need to enter a blank space into each box using the space bar on your keyboard.

How To Order Labels That Have One Line With Text & One Line Without Text
Enter the text that you want into the appropriate field (use Enter Line 1 to add text to the top line and Enter Line 2 to add text to the bottom line) and use the space bar to enter a space into the other field to request that it is left blank.

How To Order Labels That Have A Blank Space At The Start Or End Of A Line
This is a little trickier; as you can see from the instructions above, using the space bar to add a blank space instructs our system to leave a line blank. If you want to create blank spaces that sit before or after your text (for example: leaving a space for a first name followed by the surname OR entering “Room” and leaving space to write in a room number), you can enter spaces using the space bar BUT our system will usually treat these spaces as non-existent and ignore them.

The best thing to do, therefore, is to enter the spaces that you need so we know what you want and then add a note to the “Additional Information” box as you checkout so we can double check that your labels are printed correctly.

Remember, if you’re planning to write on your labels yourself you have to make sure that you use a suitable pen; laundry pens will produce print that will survive repeat trips through the washing machine but the ink from standard pens will simply wash away.

Label Planet: Top Tips – Choosing The Right Materials For Your Label Application

As the old saying goes you should always use the right tool for the right job and, here at Label Planet, we’ve got label products to suit all kinds of label applications – but you’ll only get the full benefit of the materials on offer if you pick the right label for your application.

While you might be tempted to settle for standard paper labels, we always recommend taking the time to look at alternative material options because you might find something that will, quite simply, do a much, much better job – especially if you’re creating labels for use in a professional application or you need your labels to work in a more unusual environment.

Different materials provide a variety of qualities and characteristics that can help a label perform much more efficiently or achieve a specific look or finish that you’re after – so if you need your labels to work under more challenging circumstances or provide a perfect finishing touch, it’s worth thinking carefully about the labels you choose to buy.

A Brief Guide To Our Label Materials 

Gloss Materials
These materials have a smooth coating that produces a bright, shiny finish; professional AND decorative in appearance, these labels are an ideal option if you’re trying to create a particular look or style while also drawing attention to information or details that are especially important. Our gloss labels are particularly popular for use as product labels or for use on items that are being produced for special occasions or events (e.g. wedding invitations, company brochures etc).

Transparent Materials
These materials can be seen through, which makes them a brilliant choice if you’re particularly concerned about how your labels (and labelled items) will look. Transparent labels are a perfect addition if you’re matching a surface that is itself transparent (e.g. glass items or windows), if you’re labelling a decorative surface that you don’t want to cover up, or if you’re having problems with colour matching; these labels are extremely popular for use on product packaging that has been printed with highly decorative designs or branding, as product labels on bottles and jars, or as address labels on patterned and/or textured envelopes that have been selected to deliver especially important invitations (e.g. wedding invitations or birthdays and anniversaries).

Opaque Materials
If you need to cover up or replace existing print you should consider using opaque labels. These labels are made with materials that do not transmit light, which means they cannot be seen through – if you’re trying to cover up a mistake, correct out of date information, recycle old packaging or materials, or prevent existing design work showing through and making it harder to read the information on your label, then an opaque label gives you a perfectly blank background to start from.

We have an Opaque Label product, which is made of matt white paper with an opaque adhesive. As this item is a made to order product (minimum order quantity 500 sheets + up to six working days for despatch) you might want to consider using our Gold & Silver Paper Labels as an alternative; the materials used to make these labels provide an opaque finish, which means they are a suitable alternative – providing you don’t mind using a more decorative label. 

Synthetic Materials (Polyester/Polyethylene)
These materials offer properties and characteristics that simply don’t exist in paper materials; they are extremely durable and waterproof, which makes them ideal for a variety of label applications where a label needs to be long lasting even when stored or used in more unusual environments (for example, if they are used outdoors). They are a perfect solution to the challenge of creating professional, decorative labels that are to be used to label unusual surfaces, as long lasting tracking or asset labels, or to work in conditions that standard materials simply cannot cope with. The polyethylene is a thicker material but offers a greater degree of flexibility than our polyester materials.

Splashproof Materials
We have some paper labels that are made with a gloss coating that provides a limited degree of protection against water damage and dirt; these labels can be wiped clean and dry if they are lightly splashed or get a bit dirty. Our splashproof labels provide an ideal compromise between standard paper labels and waterproof labels if you need to provide some protection against water or dirt but don’t have the budget for a completely waterproof solution.

Both our Gloss White Labels and Semi-Gloss White Labels are “splashproof”; these products are suitable for use with laser printers only or for handwriting. 

Waterproof Materials
All of our labels made of polyester or polyethylene are waterproof and so will survive in environments where they may come into contact with water and other liquids. For example, they are commonly used to label products that are to be used in kitchens or bathrooms (i.e. on food and drink packaging or on cosmetics containers) or to label items that will be displayed, stored, or used outdoors (e.g. product labels for garden centres, labels on sports equipment, or outdoor signage).

Coloured Materials
If your number one priority is a decorative appearance then we’d recommend taking a look at the coloured materials that we offer. A coloured label is a wonderful starting point if you want your labels to really stand out and make an impact; they draw attention to important information, strengthen your branding by repeating your company colours, create a luxury or decorative finish, add some creativity to your items, or simply stand out from the crowd. We offer a range of colours from subtle shades of pastels through to flashing fluorescents and magnificent metallics (by way of a delightfully crafty brown Kraft paper).

Premium Quality Materials
For a high end look that promotes a professional finish, premium quality materials offer a more decorative and clean cut appearance than standard paper, so if appearances are everything (for your labels anyway) then it may well be worth spending a little more to get that extra special finish for your items. We have plenty of materials that offer a superior finish, including:
  • Matt Premium Quality Paper Labels; these labels are made with high quality premium paper with a special coating that helps to produce an extremely sharp, high resolution print that is perfect for professional documentation and packaging.
  • Gloss White Photo Quality Paper Labels; these labels have a high quality gloss finish that makes them perfect for printing high resolution design work – they’re especially well suited to printing photographs or highly detailed designs.
  • Transparent Polyester Labels; transparent materials are a brilliant way to create layered design work, with both your label design and any features on the item you are labelling being visible at once. These labels are also perfect for creating professional seals for product packaging or documentation.
  • Silver Metallic Polyester Labels; these labels are made with a matt metallic silver polyester that has an attractive finish and is extremely popular for use as long lasting, durable tracking or asset labels on high end electrical or electronic goods.

Label Planet: Ready, Set, Print! Top Tips For Printing Your Own Labels

The majority of our customers are buying labels to print themselves using their own printer (or photocopier) at home or at work. DIY labels can be highly beneficial; you get to choose what gets printed onto your labels, how many labels get printed, and when your labels get printed – and you might even save some money along the way.

However, printing your own labels also means that you are responsible for setting up a template and a printer, and it is up to you to make sure that everything prints out properly (it’s also your toner/ink and time that you’ll waste if you get things wrong).

So, we’ve put together some top tips to help you make sure your DIY labels are perfectly printed (and not a DIY nightmare):

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS DO A TEST PRINT FIRST
Always.

Test printing allows you to check that your template and printer are set up to produce the perfect print BEFORE you use any of your actual sheets of labels. There are multiple factors that can influence how well your labels print out and a test print can help to identify issues before you start printing.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR PRINTER’S SPECIFICATIONS
Labels are a completely different medium to paper and most printers offer features and settings that are designed specifically for use when printing onto labels. We recommend:
  • Using the media bypass tray (where available)
    This tray is designed specifically for materials that are thicker than standard paper and provides a straighter path through the printer, which reduces the chances of your sheet rotating as it is pulled through and around the rollers.
  • Checking your printer’s manual for guidance/recommendations
    Your manual will include important information about the specifications of your printer (including details about the materials that it can and – more importantly – cannot process, such as maximum weights/thicknesses) and may also offer guidance on achieving the best possible print on specific media, such as labels.
  • Using the specialist facilities offered by your printer
    Some printers offer specific categories of print settings that will automatically adjust all of your printer’s settings to suit a particular medium – such as labels. Laser printers, for example, often include a specific “Labels” setting that increases the heat applied during printing and slows your printer down to ensure that the toner bonds firmly in place on your labels.
 CHECK ALL OF YOUR SETTINGS
And by “all”, we mean all.

You have to check the settings of ALL of the elements involved in printing your labels – your template, your software, and your hardware (printer). If there is an issue in any one of the settings in any one of these elements, you may find that your print simply isn’t right and your labels are ruined.

You should bear in mind that, because both hardware and software are involved in printing, it is possible for one of these elements to overrule the others, which is why it’s best to make sure that ALL of these elements are set up in the same way. Look out for:
  • Page Size Settings
    Make sure that your page size is set to A4 and that NO “scaling” settings have been applied. If your template, software, or printer is set to a page size other than A4 (e.g. if it defaults to “American Letter”) or has any scaling applied (e.g. “Fit To page” options), your printer will try to print your template onto a page size that is larger or smaller than A4 and will distort the alignment accordingly.
  • Print Type Settings
    Some software and hardware provides “print types” for you to choose from; selecting one of these types will automatically adjust your software or hardware settings to suit the characteristics of a particular medium, such as labels, to improve the quality of print that you can achieve.
  • Material Weight Settings
    Similar to “print types”, you may also be able to select a weight setting that will adjust the printing process to suit a particular weight/thickness of material, which is particularly useful when printing labels because they are constructed from multiple layers of materials and so are naturally heavier or thicker than other media (such as sheets of paper).
  • Ignore Printer Settings
    Last but not least, you should take into account the presence of any settings that could override the print settings you have chosen – settings such as “Use Driver Settings” or “Ignore Printer Settings” may cause your system to ignore the settings that you have so carefully chosen and use another (default) set in their place.

Stikins ® & Trons ®: FAQ – Do You Do These Name Labels In Size X (And Other “Sizeable” Questions)

Yup, it’s an FAQ special and this week we’re rounding up all of your name label questions about size, such as:

How Big Are Your Name Labels?
Our Stikins ® name labels measure 30mm wide by 15mm high and our Trons ® name transfers measure 35mm wide by 15mm high.

Can I Request A Bigger/Smaller Size Of Name Label?
We only supply these two sizes of name label and cannot accept orders for bespoke sizes.

Why Did You Pick These Sizes For Your Name Labels?
We believe that name labels need to be capable of two completely opposite functions; when you need them they should be easy to find and read BUT when you don’t need them they should be pretty much invisible.

We find that the sizes we have chosen are large enough to make them stand out when they need to (so the labels are easy to find), to hold text that is printed in a bold clear font size (so the labels are easy to read), and fit neatly onto the items that you need to label (so the labels don’t draw attention when they aren’t needed) – whether that’s onto the wash care label of clothing, onto the side wall or beneath the tongue of shoes, or on personal items such as lunch boxes and water bottles, or phones, stationery, and equipment.

What Size Font Do You Use?
The font size depends on the amount of text you enter when you order. Our system counts up the number of characters you have entered on each line and then selects the biggest possible font size that will allow both lines to be printed within the dimensions of each name label.

How Do I Get A Bigger Font Size?
Simply take a bit of time to think about what you want to include and be as selective as possible.

Our default layout allows you to split your text over two lines; we find that this creates a solid bold font even if you choose to include an additional piece of information on your labels (for example, we receive many orders for a full name on the top line and a phone number on the bottom line).

We advise limiting yourself to TWO pieces of information and putting one piece onto each of the two lines available; adding any more will cause your font size to reduce significantly. We also recommend being selective about the additional information you add; for example, if you want to add contact information, we recommend a phone number rather than an email address/address because the latter require far more characters to be used. 

On the other hand, if you know you only want to add one name (e.g. just a first name or just a surname) or you’re entering text that only requires a handful of characters, you can select the “Name on one line” option to boost the font size.

As a rough guide, we’ve put together an Example Print page showing the font sizes produced by different amounts of text.

Will My Name Labels Get Bigger If I Add More Text?
No. Some parents are used to sew-in name labels where the length of the labels can be adapted to suit the length of the name that has been requested. As mentioned above, our labels are made in a set size and it is the font size that adjusts to make your requested text fit rather than the label size.

How Big Are Your Packs Of Name Labels?
Both of our name label products are available in four pack sizes, as follows:
Stikins ® name labels: select from 30, 60, 90, or 120 name labels per pack
Trons ® name transfers: select from 35, 70, 105, or 140 name transfers per pack

What Size Envelope/Parcel Will My Order Arrive In?
The majority of our orders are despatched in C5 envelopes, which will slip safely through a letterbox without any trouble.
